Convert legacy PCI host handling to alloc-init-register model.
ata_init_legacy_host(), ata_request_legacy_irqs() and
ata_pci_init_bmdma() are separated out and follow the new init model.
The two legacy handling functions use separate ata_legacy_devres
instead of generic devm_* resources. This reduces devres overhead for
legacy hosts which was a bit high because it didn't use PCI/iomap
merged resoruces.
ata_pci_init_one() is rewritten in terms of the aboved functions but
native mode handling is still using the old method. Conversion will
be completed when native mode handling is updated.

Reorganize ata_host_alloc() and its subroutines into the following
three functions.
* ata_host_alloc() : allocates host and its ports. shost is not
registered automatically.
* ata_scsi_add_hosts() : allocates and adds shosts associated with an
ATA host. Used by ata_host_register().
* ata_host_register() : takes a fully initialized ata_host structure
and registers it to libata layer and probes it.
Only ata_host_alloc() and ata_host_register() are exported.
ata_device_add() is rewritten using the above functions. This patch
does not introduce any observable behavior change. Things worth
mentioning.
* print_id is assigned at registration time and LLDs are allowed to
overallocate ports and reduce host->n_ports during initialization.
ata_host_register() will throw away unused ports automatically.
* All SCSI host initialization stuff now resides in
ata_scsi_add_hosts() in libata-scsi.c, where it should be.
* ipr is now the only user of ata_host_init(). Either kill it by
converting ipr to use ata_host_alloc() and friends or rename and
move it to libata-scsi.c

->post_internal_cmd is simplified EH for internal commands. Its
primary mission is to stop the controller such that no rogue memory
access or other activities occur after the internal command is
released. It may provide error diagnostics by setting qc->err_mask
but this hasn't been a requirement.
To ignore SETXFER failure for CFA devices, libata needs to know
whether a command was failed by the device or for any other reason.
ie. internal command needs to get AC_ERR_DEV right.
This patch makes the following changes to AC_ERR_DEV handling and
->post_internal_cmd semantics to accomodate this need and simplify
callback implementation.
1. As long as the correct bits in the result TF registers are set,
there is no need to set AC_ERR_DEV explicitly. libata EH core
takes care of that for both normal and internal commands.
2. The only requirement for ->post_internal_cmd() is to put the
controller into quiescent state. It needs not to set any err_mask.
3. ata_exec_internal_sg() performs minimal error analysis such that
AC_ERR_DEV is automatically set as long as result_tf is filled
correctly.

There are several registers which describe how the controller is
configured. These registers are sometimes implemented as r/w
registers which are configured by firmware and get cleared on
controller reset or after suspend/resume cycle. ahci saved and
restored those values inside ahci_reset_controller() which is a bit
messy and doesn't work over suspend/resume cycle.
This patch implements ahci_save/restore_initial_config(). The save
function is called during driver initialization and saves cap and
port_map to hpriv. The restore function is called after the
controller is reset to restore the initial values.
Sometimes the initial firmware values are inconsistent and need to be
fixed up. This is handled by ahci_save_initial_config(). For this,
there are two versions of saved registers. One to write back to the
hardware register, the other to use during driver operation. This is
necessary to keep ahci's behavior unchanged (write back fixed up
port_map while keeping cap as-is).
This patch makes ahci save the register values once before the first
controller reset, not after it's been reset. Also, the same stored
values are used written back after each reset, so the register values
are properly recovered after suspend/resume cycle.

but the majority of drives in existance still implement them.
The WRITE_LONG and WRITE_LONG_ONCE commands are of particular
interest for fault injection testing -- eg. creating "media errors"

The fussy bit is that these commands require a non-standard

Reading from the ATA shadow registers while we are in ADMA mode may cause
undefined behavior. Don't read the ATA status register when completing
commands for this reason, it shouldn't be needed as the controller will
notify us if the command failed. Also, don't allow commands with result
taskfile requested to execute in ADMA mode, since that requires accessing
the shadow registers. We also still need to override tf_read since libata
will read the result taskfile on a command failure, and we need to go into

This patch changes sata_promise so that the PATA ports
on TX2plus chips are bound to the pdc_pata_ops structure.
This means that operations called from the SATA ops
structures don't need any SATA-vs-PATA tests any more.
Instead, operations that depend on a port being SATA or
PATA are separated into different procedures.
* pdc_cable_type() is split into a PATA version and a
SATA version
* pdc_error_handler() is split into a PATA version and a
SATA version, that both call a common version after
setting up the `hardreset' function pointer
* pdc_old_check_atapi_dma() is now only used for SATAI
ports, so is renamed to pdc_old_sata_check_atapi_dma()
and simplified
* pdc_sata_scr_{read,write}() are now only used for SATA
ports, so their is-not-SATA tests are removed
* pdc_port_start() is split into three procedures: a wrapper
which performs the ->ops adjustment on TX2plus PATA ports,
a procedure with the common code, and a procedure with
the SATA-specific code (this bit might be cleaned up by
Tejun's new init model)

Both old-IDE and libata should be able handle all controllers and
devices found using normal resource reservation methods.
This eliminates the awful, low-performing split-driver configuration
where old-IDE drove the PATA portion of a PCI device, in PIO-only mode,
and libata drove the SATA portion of the /same/ PCI device, in DMA mode.
Typically vendors would ship SATA hard drive / PATA optical
configuration, which would lend itself to slow (PIO-only) CD-ROM
performance.
For Intel users running in combined mode, it is now wholly dependent on
your driver choice (potentially link order, if you compile both drivers
in) whether old-IDE or libata will drive your hardware.
In either case, you will get full performance from both SATA and PATA
ports now, without having to pass a kernel command line parameter.

2.6.21-rc has horrible problems with libata and PATA cable types (and
thus speeds). This occurs because Tejun fixed a pile of other bugs and
we now do cable detect enforcement for drive side detection properly.
Unfortunately we don't do the process around cable detection right. Tejun
identified the problem and pointed to the right Annex in the spec, this patch
implements the rest of the needed changes.
We add a ->cable_detect() method called after the identify
sequence which allows a host to do host side detection at this point
should it wish, or to modify the results of the drive side identify.
This separate ->cable_detect method also cleans up a lot of code because
many drivers have their own error_handler methods which really just set
the cable type.
If there is no ->cable_detect method the cable type is left alone so a
driver setting it earlier (eg because it has the SATA flags set or
because it uses the old error_handler approach) will still do the right
thing (or at least the same thing) as before.
This patch simply adds the cable_detect method and helpers it doesn't use
them but other follow up patches will (ie Adrian please don't submit
patches to unexport them ;))

void ata_tf_read(struct ata_port *ap, struct ata_taskfile *tf)
{

tf->command = ata_check_status(ap);
...
if (tf->flags & ATA_TFLAG_LBA48) {

{
struct ata_port *ap = qc->ap;
ap->ops->tf_read(ap, &qc->result_tf);
qc->result_tf.flags = qc->tf.flags;
}
Based on this, those last two statements fill_result_tf()
appear to me to be in the wrong order, in that the tf->flags
are uninitialized at the point where tf_read() is invoked.
So for lba48 commands, tf_read() won't be reading back the
full lba48 register contents..
Correct?

get copied to result_tf before they are used by tf_read().

The ACPI specification states, and BIOS implementations depend on,
_STM being called before _GTF.
SATA does this, but PATA does not. So for now, simply
prevent execution of _GTF on PATA devices. Longer term we

Commit 721449bf0d added support for using the
ADMA notifier bits to determine which commands to check for completion.
However there have been reports that this causes command timeouts in certain
cases. This is still being investigated. In addition, apparently the notifiers
won't work if ADMA is disabled on the other port as a result of an ATAPI device
being connected, and we don't handle this case properly.
For now, just restore the previous behavior of checking all active commands
to see if they are complete, without relying on the notifiers.

Recently I got my hands on nVidia's MCP61 PM-AM board, and
it contains IDE chip configured by BIOS with only primary
channel enabled. This confuses code which probes for
device DMA capabilities - it gets 0x60 (happy duplex
device) from primary channel BMDMA, but 0xFF (nobody here)
from secondary channel BMDMA. Due to this code then believes
that chip is simplex. I do not address this problem in
my patch, as I'm not sure how to handle this. Probably
ata_pci_init_one should have bitmap of enabled/possible
interfaces instead of their count, but it looks like
quite intrusive change, and maybe we do not care - for device
with only one channel simplex and regular DMA engines are
same.
But making device simplex pointed out that support for
DMA on simplex devices is currently broken - ata_dev_xfermask
tests whether device is simplex and if it is whether DMA
engine was assigned to this port. If not then it strips
out DMA bits from device. Problem is that code which assigns
DMA engine to port in ata_set_mode first detect device
mode and assigns DMA engine to channel only if some DMA
capable device was found.
And as xfermask stripped out DMA bits, host->simplex_claimed
is always NULL with current implementation.
By allowing DMA either if simplex_claimed is NULL or if it
points to current port DMA can be finally used - it gets
assigned to first port which contains any DMA capable
device.

Fix wrong "port" calculations in pdc202xx_{configure_piomode,set_dmamode}()
They were broken for all configurations except one (master device on primary
channel, no other devices) and as a result device settings + PIO/DMA timings
were being programmed into the wrong PCI registers. This could result in
a large variety of problems including data corruption, hangs etc. (depending
on devices used and your luck :-).
ap->port_no ap->devno used PCI registers correct PCI registers

Also forward port recent fixes from drivers/ide pdc202xx_old driver:
* fix XFER_MW_DMA0 timings (they were overclocked, use the official ones)
* fix bitmasks for clearing bits of register B:
- when programming DMA mode bit 0x10 of register B was cleared which
resulted in overclocked PIO timing setting (iff PIO0 was used)
- when programming PIO mode bits 0x18 weren't cleared so suboptimal
timings were used for PIO1-4 if PIO0 was previously set (bit 0x10)
and for PIO0/3/4 if PIO1/2 was previously set (bit 0x08)
and finally bump driver version.

pata_legacy fails to detect the disk on my old ISA/VLB 486:
it starts to probe io=0x1f0 ctr=0x3f6 irq=15, complains
loudly about IDENTIFYs timing out, and finally fails.
(Sorry I couldn't capture the kernel's boot messages.)
It turns out that the driver's mapping from io to irq in
legacy_irq[] is wrong: index 0 for io=0x1f0 has irq=15 but
should have irq=14, and index 1 for io=0x170 has irq=14 but

2.6.21-rc has horrible problems with libata and PATA cable types (and
thus speeds). This occurs because Tejun fixed a pile of other bugs and
we now do cable detect enforcement for drive side detection properly.
Unfortunately we don't do the process around cable detection right. Tejun
identified the problem and pointed to the right Annex in the spec, this patch
implements the needed changes.
The basic requirement is that we have to identify the slave before the
master.
The patch switches the identify order so that we can do the drive side
detection correctly.

The initial simplex handling code is fooled if you suspend and resume.
This also causes problems with some single channel controllers which
claim to be simplex.
The fix is fairly simple, instead of keeping a flag to remember if we
gave away the simplex channel we remember the actual owner. As the owner
is always part of the host_set we don't even need a refcount.
Knowing the owner also means we can reassign simplex DMA channels in
future hotplug code etc if we need to

Separate sata_vsc interrupt handling into a normal (per-port) path and an
error path with the addition of vsc_port_intr and vsc_error_intr
respectively. The error path handles interrupt based
hotplug events which requires the definition of vsc_freeze and vsc_thaw.
Note: vsc_port_intr has a workaround for unexpected interrupts that occur
during polled commands. This fixes a regression between 2.6.19 and 2.6.20.
Changes in take2:
* removed definition of invalid fis bit
* let standard ata-error-handling handle the serror register
* clear all unhandled interrupts
* revert changes to vsc_intr_mask_update (vsc_thaw enables all interrupts)
* use unlikely() for the pci-abort and not-our-interrupt cases in vsc_sata_interrupt

ata_port has two different id fields - id and port_no. id is
system-wide 1-based unique id for the port while port_no is 0-based
host-wide port number. The former is primarily used to identify the
ATA port to the user in printk messages while the latter is used in
various places in libata core and LLDs to index the port inside the
host.
The two fields feel quite similar and sometimes ap->id is used in
place of ap->port_no, which is very difficult to spot. This patch
renames ap->id to ap->print_id to reduce the possibility of such bugs.

Some debug output in the ADMA error_handler function was removed recently,
but it may be useful in certain cases, like NCQ commands timing out. Add it
back in, but make it a bit more intelligent so that it only prints if
command(s) are active and only prints the CPBs for those commands.
That way it won't spew at inappropriate times like suspend/resume.

I was trying to use HDIO_DRIVE_TASK for something today,
and discovered that the libata implementation does not copy
over the upper four LBA bits from args[6].
This is serious, as any tools using this ioctl would have their
commands applied to the wrong sectors on the drive, possibly resulting
in disk corruption.
Ideally, newer apps should use SG_IO/ATA_16 directly,
avoiding this bug. But with libata poised to displace drivers/ide,
better compatibility here is a must.
This patch fixes libata to use the upper four LBA bits passed
in from the ioctl.
The original drivers/ide implementation copies over all bits
except for the master/slave select bit. With this patch,
libata will copy only the four high-order LBA bits,
just in case there are assumptions elsewhere in libata (?).

The current EH speed down code is more of a proof that the EH
framework is capable of adjusting transfer speed in response to error.
This patch puts some intelligence into EH speed down sequence. The
rules are..
* If there have been more than three timeout, HSM violation or
unclassified DEV errors for known supported commands during last 10
mins, NCQ is turned off.
* If there have been more than three timeout or HSM violation for known
supported command, transfer mode is slowed down. If DMA is active,
it is first slowered by one grade (e.g. UDMA133->100). If that
doesn't help, it's slowered to 40c limit (UDMA33). If PIO is
active, it's slowered by one grade first. If that doesn't help,
PIO0 is forced. Note that this rule does not change transfer mode.
DMA is never degraded into PIO by this rule.
* If there have been more than ten ATA bus, timeout, HSM violation or
unclassified device errors for known supported commands && speeding
down DMA mode didn't help, the device is forced into PIO mode. Note
that this rule is considered only for PATA devices and is pretty
difficult to trigger.
One error can only trigger one rule at a time. After a rule is
triggered, error history is cleared such that the next speed down
happens only after some number of errors are accumulated. This makes
sense because now speed down is done in bigger stride.

* Move forcing device to PIO0 on device disable into
ata_dev_disable(). This makes both old and new EHs act the same
way.
* Speed down only PIO mode on probe failure. All commands used during
probing are PIO commands. There's no point in speeding down DMA.
* Retry at least once after -ENODEV. Some devices report garbled
IDENTIFY data after certain events. This shouldn't cause device
detach and re-attach.
* Rearrange EH failure path for simplicity.

Make ata_down_xfermask_limit() accept @sel instead of @force_pio0.
@sel selects how the xfermask limit will be adjusted. The following
selectors are defined.
* ATA_DNXFER_PIO : only speed down PIO
* ATA_DNXFER_DMA : only speed down DMA, don't cause transfer mode change
* ATA_DNXFER_40C : apply 40c cable limit
* ATA_DNXFER_FORCE_PIO : force PIO
* ATA_DNXFER_FORCE_PIO0 : force PIO0 (same as original with @force_pio0 == 1)
* ATA_DNXFER_ANY : same as original with @force_pio0 == 0
Currently, only ANY and FORCE_PIO0 are used to maintain the original
behavior. Other selectors will be used later to improve EH speed down
sequence.

This patch updates the sata_promise driver to use new-style
libata error handling for 20619 (TX4000) chips. sata_promise
already uses new EH for the other chips it supports, so the
patch is quite simple:
* remove ->phy_reset and ->eng_timeout ops from pdc_pata_ops,
and instead bind ->freeze, ->thaw, ->error_handler, and
->post_internal_cmd to existing new EH functions
* drop ATA_FLAG_SRST from board_20619's flags
* remove now unused pdc_pata_phy_reset() and pdc_eng_timeout()

After Al Viro (finally) succeeded in removing the sched.h #include in module.h
recently, it makes sense again to remove other superfluous sched.h includes.
There are quite a lot of files which include it but don't actually need
anything defined in there. Presumably these includes were once needed for
macros that used to live in sched.h, but moved to other header files in the
course of cleaning it up.
To ease the pain, this time I did not fiddle with any header files and only
removed #includes from .c-files, which tend to cause less trouble.

Some problems showed up recently with cache flush commands timing out on
sata_nv. Previously these commands were always handled by transitioning to
legacy mode from ADMA mode first. The timeout problem was worked around
already by a change to the interrupt handling code for legacy mode, but for
non-data commands like these it appears we can handle them in ADMA mode, so
the switch to legacy mode is not needed.
This patch changes the behavior so that we use ADMA mode to submit
interrupt-driven commands with ATA_PROT_NODATA protocol. In addition to
avoiding the problem mentioned above entirely, this avoids the overhead of
switching to legacy mode and back to ADMA mode for handling cache flushes.
When handling non-DMA-mapped commands, we leave the APRD blank and clear
the NV_CPB_CTL_APRD_VALID field in the CPB so the controller does not
attempt to read it.

This cleans up a few issues with the error handling in sata_nv in ADMA mode
to make it more consistent with other NCQ-capable drivers like ahci and
sata_sil24:
- When a command failed, we would effectively set AC_ERR_DEV on the
queued command always. In the case of NCQ commands this prevents libata
from doing a log page query to determine the details of the failed
command, since it thinks we've already analyzed. Just set flags in the
port ehi->err_mask, then freeze or abort and let libata figure out what
went wrong.
- The code handled NV_ADMA_STAT_CPBERR as a "really bad error" which
caused it to set error flags on every queued command. I don't know
exactly what this flag means (no docs, grr!) but from what I can guess
from the standard ADMA spec, it just means that one or more of the CPBs
had an error, so we just need to go through and do our normal checks in
this case.
- In the error_handler function the code would always dump the state of
all the CPBs. This output seems redundant at this point since libata
already dumps the state of all active commands on errors (and it also
triggers at times when it shouldn't, like when suspending). Take this
out.

support managed LLDs. This patch simplifies initialization and fixes
many resource related bugs in init failure and detach path. For
example, all converted drivers now handle ata_device_add() failure
gracefully without excessive resource rollback code.
As most resources are released automatically on driver detach, many
drivers don't need or can do with much simpler ->{port|host}_stop().
In general, stop callbacks are need iff port or host needs to be given
commands to shut it down. Note that freezing is enough in many cases

- pdc_qc_prep() calls pdc_atapi_pkt() for ATAPI_NODATA

This patch (against libata #upstream + the ATAPI cleanup patch)
reimplements sata_promise's ATAPI support to format ATAPI DMA
commands as normal packets, and to issue them via the hardware's
normal packet machinery.
It turns out that the only reason for issuing ATAPI DMA
commands via the pdc_issue_atapi_pkt_cmd() procedure was to
perform two interrupt-fiddling steps for ATA_DFLAG_CDB_INTR
devices. But these steps aren't needed because sata_promise
sets ATA_FLAG_PIO_POLLING, which disables DMA for those devices.
The remaining steps can easily be done in ATA taskfile packets.
Concrete changes:
- pdc_atapi_dma_pkt() is extended to program all packet setup
steps, and not just contain the CDB; the sequence of steps
exactly mirrors what pdc_issue_atapi_pkt_cmd() did
- pdc_atapi_dma_pkt() needed more parameters: simplify it by
just passing 'qc' and having it extract the data it needs
- pdc_issue_atai_pkt_cmd() and its two helper procedures
pdc_wait_for_drq() and pdc_wait_on_busy() are removed

libata used two separate sets of variables to record request size and
current offset for ATA and ATAPI. This is confusing and fragile.
This patch replaces qc->nsect/cursect with qc->nbytes/curbytes and
kills them. Also, ata_pio_sector() is updated to use bytes for
qc->cursg_ofs instead of sectors. The field used to be used in bytes
for ATAPI and in sectors for ATA.

This patch adds ATAPI support to the sata_promise driver.
This has been tested on both first- and second-generation
chips (20378 and 20575), and with both SATAPI and PATAPI
devices. CD-writing works.
SATAPI DMA works on second-generation chips, but on
first-generation chips SATAPI is limited to PIO due
to what appears to be HW limitations.
PATAPI DMA works on both first- and second-generation
chips, but requires the separate PATA support patch
before it can be used on TX2plus chips.
The functional changes to the driver are:
- remove ATA_FLAG_NO_ATAPI from PDC_COMMON_FLAGS
- add ->check_atapi_dma() operation to enable DMA for bulk data
transfers but force PIO for other ATAPI commands; this filter
is from Promise's driver and largely matches pata_pdc207x.c
- use a more restrictive ->check_atapi_dma() on first-generation
chips to force SATAPI to always use PIO
- add handling of ATAPI protocols to pdc_qc_prep(), pdc_host_intr(),
and pdc_qc_issue_prot(): ATAPI_DMA is handled by the driver
while non-DMA protocols are handed over to libata generic code
- add pdc_issue_atapi_pkt_cmd() to handle the initial steps in
issuing ATAPI DMA commands before sending the actual CDB;
this procedure was ported from Promise's driver

This patch implements a simple way of setting up per-port
flags on the SATA+PATA Promise TX2plus chips, which is a
prerequisite for supporting the PATA port on those chips.
It is based on the observation that ap->flags isn't really
used until after ->port_start() has been invoked. So it
places the "exceptional" per-port flags array in the driver's
private host structure, and uses it in ->port_start() to
finalise the port's flags.
This patch obsoletes the #promise-sata-pata branch included

Control(1) should be set. This used to be done in both ahci and
pata_jmicron but while moving programming to PCI quirk, it was removed
from ahci part while still left in pata_jmicron.
The implemented JMicron PCI quirk was incorrect in that it didn't
program AHCI mode enable bits. If pata_jmicron is loaded first and
programs those bits, the ahci ports work; otherwise, ahci device
detection fails miserably.
This patch makes JMicron PCI quirk clear SATA IDE mode bits and set

libata's SCSI translation for the SCSI START STOP UNIT command with the
START bit clear (i.e. stopping the drive) appears to be incorrect. It
sends an ATA STANDBY command with the time period set to 0, which the code
comment says means "now", but the ATA standard says this means disable the
standby timer, which effectively does nothing. Change this to issue a
STANDBY IMMEDIATE command which will actually spin the drive down. The SAT

On the Maple board, the AMD8111 IDE is in legacy mode... except that it
appears on IRQ 20 instead of IRQ 15. For drivers/ide this was handled by
the architecture's "pci_get_legacy_ide_irq()" function, but in libata we
just hard-code the numbers 14 and 15.
This patch provides asm-powerpc/libata-portmap.h which maps the IRQ as
appropriate, having added a pci_dev argument to the
ATA_{PRIM,SECOND}ARY_IRQ macros.
There's probably a better way to do this -- especially if we observe
that the _only_ case in which this seemingly-generic
"pci_get_legacy_ide_irq()" function returns anything other than 14 and
15 for primary and secondary respectively is the case of the AMD8111 on
the Maple board -- couldn't we handle that with a special case in the
pata_amd driver, or perhaps with a PCI quirk for Maple to switch it into
native mode during early boot and assign resources properly?

Some ATA/ATAPI devices act weirdly after the link is put into slumber
mode. Some hang completely requiring physical power removal while
others fail to wake up till the link is hardreset a couple of times.
The addition of slumber on power down was never driven by real need.
It just followed what ahci spec said literally. The spec itself seems
faulty in that it doesn't consider devices (not controllers) which
don't support link powersaving mode.
Theory never matches reality when it comes to dark allys of cheap
ATA/ATAPI world. It's just unrealistic to expect vendors to test
rarely used link powersaving feature rigorously. This patch makes
ahci more friendly to the coldness of reality.
This shouldn't have any negative effect - when suspend operation
succeeds, we power off the whole machine; otherwise, we wake up
everything. I can't see any reason to be so elaborate with powering
down the link in the first place.

Several people reported issues with certain drive commands timing out on
sata_nv controllers running in ADMA mode. The commands in question were
non-DMA-mapped commands, usually FLUSH CACHE or FLUSH CACHE EXT.
From experimentation it appears that the NV_INT_DEV indication isn't
always set when a legitimate command completion interrupt is received on
a legacy-mode command, at least not on these controllers in ADMA mode.
When a command is pending on the port, force the flag on always in the
irq_stat value before calling nv_host_intr so that the drive busy state
is always checked by ata_host_intr.
This also fixes some questionable code in nv_host_intr which called
ata_check_status when a command was pending and ata_host_intr returned
"unhandled". If the device interrupted at just the wrong time this could
cause interrupts to be lost.

This is a slight variant on the patch I posted December 16th to fix
libata combined mode handling. The only real change is that we now
correctly also reserve BAR1,2,4. That is basically a neatness issue.
Jeff was unhappy about two things
1. That it didn't work in the case of one channel native one channel
legacy.
This is a silly complaint because the SFF layer in libata doesn't handle
this case yet anyway.
2. The case where combined mode is in use and IDE=n.
In this case the libata quirk code reserves the resources in question
correctly already.
Once the combined mode stuff is redone properly (2.6.21) then the entire
mess turns into a single pci_request_regions() for all cases and all the
ugly resource hackery goes away.
I'm sending this now rather than after running full test suites so that
it can get the maximal testing in a short time. I'll be running tests on

libata depended on SCSI command to have the correct length when
tranlating it into an ATA command. This generally worked for commands
issued by SCSI HLD but user could issue arbitrary broken command using
sg interface.
Also, when building ATAPI command, full command size was always
copied. Because some ATAPI devices needs bytes after CDB cleared, if
upper layer doesn't clear bytes after CDB, such devices will
malfunction. This necessiated recent clear-garbage-after-CDB fix in
sg interfaces. However, scsi_execute() isn't fixed yet and HL-DT-ST
DVD-RAM GSA-H30N malfunctions on initialization commands issued from
SCSI.
This patch makes xlat functions always consider SCSI cmd_len. Each
translation function checks for proper cmd_len and ATAPI translaation

This patch converts sata_promise to use new-style libata error
handling on Promise SATA chips, for both SATA and PATA ports.
* ATA_FLAG_SRST is no longer set
* ->phy_reset is no longer set as it is unused when ->error_handler
is present, and pdc_sata_phy_reset() has been removed
* pdc_freeze() masks interrupts and halts DMA via PDC_CTLSTAT
* pdc_thaw() clears interrupt status in PDC_INT_SEQMASK and then
unmasks interrupts in PDC_CTLSTAT
* pdc_error_handler() reinitialises the port if it isn't frozen,
and then invokes ata_do_eh() with standard {s,}ata reset methods
* pdc_post_internal_cmd() resets the port in case of errors
* the PATA-only 20619 chip continues to use old-style EH:
not by necessity but simply because I don't have documentation
for it or any way to test it
Since the previous version pdc_error_handler() has been rewritten
and it now mostly matches ahci and sata_sil24. In case anyone
wonders: the call to pdc_reset_port() isn't a heavy-duty reset,
it's a light-weight reset to quickly put a port into a sane state.
The discussion about the PCI flushes in pdc_freeze() and pdc_thaw()
seemed to end with a consensus that the flushes are OK and not
obviously redundant, so I decided to keep them for now.
This patch was prepared against 2.6.19-git7, but it also applies
to 2.6.19 + libata #upstream, with or without the revised sata_promise
cleanup patch I recently submitted.
This patch does conflict with the #promise-sata-pata patch:
this patch removes pdc_sata_phy_reset() while #promise-sata-pata
modifies it. The correct patch resolution is to remove the function.

on both SATA and PATA ports.

This patch performs two simple cleanups of sata_promise.
* Remove board_20771 and map device id 0x3577 to board_2057x.
After the recent corrections for SATAII chips, board_20771 and
board_2057x were equivalent in the driver.
* Remove hp->hotplug_offset and use hp->flags & PDC_FLAG_GEN_II
to compute hotplug_offset in pdc_host_init(). hp->hotplug_offset
was used to distinguish 1st and 2nd generation chips in one
particular case, but now we have that information in a more
general form in hp->flags, so hp->hotplug_offset is redundant.
Changes since previous submission: rebased on libata-dev #upstream,
cleaned up hotplug_offset computation based on Tejun's comments,
expanded hotplug_offset removal rationale.
This patch does not depend on the pending new EH conversion patch.

This patch adds code to fix up the PHYMODE4 "align timing"
register value on second-generation Promise SATA chips.
Failure to correct this value on non-x86 machines makes
drive detection prone to failure due to timeouts. (I've
observed about 50% detection failure rates on SPARC64.)
The HW boots with a bad value in this register, but on x86
machines the Promise BIOS corrects it to the value recommended
by the manual, so most people have been unaffected by this issue.
After developing the patch I checked Promise's SATAII driver,
and discovered that it also corrects PHYMODE4 just like this
patch does.

libata switched to IRQ-driven IDENTIFY when IRQ-driven PIO was
introduced. This has caused a lot of problems including device
misdetection and phantom device.
ATA_FLAG_DETECT_POLLING was added recently to selectively use polling
IDENTIFY on problemetic drivers but many controllers and devices are
affected by this problem and trying to adding ATA_FLAG_DETECT_POLLING
for each such case is diffcult and not very rewarding.
This patch makes libata always use polling IDENTIFY. This is
consistent with libata's original behavior and drivers/ide's behavior.

ahci_init_controller() calls ahci_deinit_port() to make sure the
controller is stopped before initializing the controller. In turn,
ahci_deinit_port() invokes ahci_power_down() to power down the port.
If the controller supports slumber mode, the link is put into it.
Unfortunately, some devices don't implement link powersaving mode
properly and show erratic behavior after link is put into slumber
mode. For example, HL-DT-ST DVD-RAM GSA-H30N completely locks up on
slumber transition and can only be recovered with the *REAL* hard
reset - power removal and reapply.
Note that this makes the first probing reset different from all
others. If the above dvd-ram is hotplugged after ahci is initialized,
no problem occurs because ahci is already fully initialized with phy
powered up. So, this might also be the reason for other weird AHCI
initial probing abnormalities.
This patch moves power up/down out of port init/deinit and call them
only when needed.
Power down is now called only when suspending. As system suspend
usually involves powering down 12v for storage devices, this shouldn't
cause problem even if the attached device doesn't support slumber
mode. However, in partial power management and suspend failure cases,
devices might lock up after suspend attempt. I thought about removing
transition to slumber mode altogether but ahci spec mandates it before
HBA D3 state transition. Blacklisting such devices might be the
solution.

Now that BMDMA status is recorded in irq handler. ata_bmdma_freeze()
is free to manipulate host status. Under certain circumstances, some
controllers (ICH7 in enhanced mode w/ IRQ shared) raise IRQ when CTL
register is written to and ATA_NIEN doesn't mask it.
This patch makes ata_bmdma_freeze() clear all pending IRQs after
freezing a port. This change makes explicit clearing in
ata_device_add() unnecessary and thus kills it. The removed code was
SFF-specific and was in the wrong place.
Note that ->freeze() handler is always called under ap->lock held and
irq disabled. Even if CTL manipulation causes stuck IRQ, it's cleared
immediately. This should be safe (enough) even in SMP environment.
More correct solution is to mask the IRQ from IRQ controller but that
would be an overkill.

code now disables the PCI configuration register bits for ADMA so that
this works, and ensures that no ATAPI DMA commands go through until this
is done.

This patch updates the sata_promise driver as follows:
- Correct typo in definition of PDC_TBG_MODE: it's at 0x41C not 0x41
in first-generation chips. This error caused PCI access alignment
exceptions on SPARC64, and on all platforms it disabled the expected
initialisation of TBG mode.
- Add flags field to struct pdc_host_priv. Define PDC_FLAG_GEN_II
and use it to distinguish first- and second-generation chips.
- Prevent the FLASH_CTL FIFO_SHD bit from being set to 1 on second-
generation chips. This matches Promises' ulsata2 driver.
- Prevent TBG mode and SLEW rate initialisation in second-generation chips.
These two registers have moved, TBG mode has been redefined, and
Promise's ulsata2 driver no longer attempts to initialise them.
- Correct PCI device table so devices 0x3570, 0x3571, and 0x3d73 are
marked as 2057x (2nd gen) not 2037x (1st gen).
- Correct PCI device table so device 0x3d17 is marked as 40518
(2nd gen 4 ports) not 20319 (1st gen 4 ports).
- Correct pdc_ata_init_one() to treat 20771 as a second-generation chip.
Tested on 0x3d75 (2nd gen), 0x3d73 (2nd gen), and 0x3373 (1st gen) chips.
The information comes from the newly uploaded Promise SATA HW specs,
Promise's ultra and ulsata2 drivers, and debugging on 3d75/3d73/3373 chips.

PATA PIIX uses reset signature + TF r/w test for device presence
detection, which doesn't always work. It sometimes reports phantom
device which results in IDENTIFY timeouts.
SATA PIIX uses some combination of PCS + reset signature + TF r/w test
for device presence detection. No combination satifies all and for
some controllers, there doesn't seem to be any combination which
works reliably.
This patch makes both PATA and SATA piix's use reset signature + TF
r/w + polling IDENTIFY for device detection. This is what the old
libata (before irq-pio and new EH) did and what IDE does.
This patch also removes now obsolete PIIX_FLAG_IGNORE_PCS, force_pcs
and related code.
Signed-off-by: Jeff Garzik <jeff@garzik.org>
On some controllers (ICHs in piix mode), there is *NO* reliable way to
determine device presence other than issuing IDENTIFY and see how the
transaction proceeds by watching the TF status register.
libata acted this way before irq-pio and phantom devices caused very
little problem but now that IDENTIFY is performed using IRQ drive PIO,
such phantom devices now result in multiple 30sec timeouts during
boot.
This patch implements ATA_FLAG_DETECT_POLLING. If a LLD sets this
flag, libata core issues the initial IDENTIFY in polling mode and if
the initial data transfer fails w/ HSM violation, the port is
considered to be empty thus replicating the old libata and IDE
behavior.

Many drives support LBA48 even when its capacity is smaller than
1<<28, as LBA48 is required for many functionalities. FLUSH_EXT is
mandatory for drives w/ LBA48 support.
Interestingly, at least one of such drives (ST960812A) has problems
dealing with FLUSH_EXT. It eventually completes the command but takes
around 7 seconds to finish in many cases thus drastically slowing down
IO transactions. This seems to be a firmware bug which sneaked into
production probably because no other ATA driver including linux IDE
issues FLUSH_EXT to drives which report support for LBA48 & FLUSH_EXT
but is smaller than 1<<28 blocks.
This patch adds ATA_DFLAG_FLUSH_EXT which is set iff the drive
supports LBA48 & FLUSH_EXT and is larger than LBA28 limit. Both cache
flush paths are updated to issue FLUSH_EXT only when the flag is set.
Note that the changed behavior is more inline with the rest of libata.

libata EH used to perform ata_set_mode() iff the EH session performed
reset as indicated by ATA_EHI_DID_RESET. This is incorrect because
->dev_config() called by revalidation is allowed to modify transfer
mode which ata_set_mode() should take care of. This patch implements
the following two flags.
* ATA_EHI_SETMODE: set during EH to schedule ata_set_mode(). Both new
device attachment and revalidation set this flag.
* ATA_EHI_POST_SETMODE: set while the device is revalidated after
ata_set_mode(). Post-setmode revalidation is different from initial
configuaration and EH revalidation in that ->dev_config() is not
allowed tune transfer mode. LLD can use this flag to determine
whether it's allowed to tune transfer mode. Note that POST_SETMODE
->dev_config() is guaranteed to be preceded by non-POST_SETMODE
->dev_config().

Implement ehi flag ATA_EHI_PRINTINFO. This flag is set when device
configuration needs to print out device info. This used to be handled
by @print_info argument to ata_dev_configure() but LLDs also need to
know about it in ->dev_config() callback.
This patch replaces @print_info w/ ATA_EHI_PRINTINFO and make sata_sil
print workaround messages only on the initial configuration.

libata waits for !BSY even when the status register reports 0xff.
This causes long boot delays when D8 isn't pulled down properly. This
patch does the followings.
* don't wait if status register is 0xff in all wait functions
* make ata_busy_sleep() return 0 on success and -errno on failure.
-ENODEV is returned on 0xff status and -EBUSY on other failures.
* make ata_bus_softreset() succeed on 0xff status. 0xff status is not
reset failure. It indicates no device. This removes unnecessary
retries on such ports. Note that the code change assumes unoccupied
port reporting 0xff status does not produce valid device signature.

This patch adds support for ADMA mode on NVIDIA nForce4 (CK804/MCP04) SATA
controllers to the sata_nv driver. Benefits of ADMA mode include:
- NCQ support
- Reduced CPU overhead (controller DMAs command information from memory
instead of them being pushed in by the CPU)
- Full 64-bit DMA support
ADMA mode is enabled by default in this version. To disable it, set the
module parameter adma_enabled=0.

This is a legacy mode PATA driver for the 6101/45 and will also drive
the SATA ports 1 & 2 in legacy mode as well if desired. Tested and
confirmed working by users. The chip supports AHCI type behaviour for
SATA and has a more advanced PATA interface as well so this driver will
get it working but not get best performance for now.

JMicron AHCI controllers set PORT_IRQ_IF_ERR on device errors. The
IRQ status bit indicates interface error or protocol mismatch and ahci
driver interprets it into AC_ERR_ATA_BUS. So, whenever an ATAPI
device raises check condition, ahci interprets it as ATA bus error and
thus resets it which, in turn, raises check condition thus creating a
reset loop and rendering the device unuseable.
This patch makes JMB controllers ignore PORT_IRQ_IF_ERR when
interpreting error condition.

Pass the work_struct pointer to the work function rather than context data.
The work function can use container_of() to work out the data.
For the cases where the container of the work_struct may go away the moment the
pending bit is cleared, it is made possible to defer the release of the
structure by deferring the clearing of the pending bit.
To make this work, an extra flag is introduced into the management side of the
work_struct. This governs auto-release of the structure upon execution.
Ordinarily, the work queue executor would release the work_struct for further
scheduling or deallocation by clearing the pending bit prior to jumping to the
work function. This means that, unless the driver makes some guarantee itself
that the work_struct won't go away, the work function may not access anything
else in the work_struct or its container lest they be deallocated.. This is a
problem if the auxiliary data is taken away (as done by the last patch).
However, if the pending bit is *not* cleared before jumping to the work
function, then the work function *may* access the work_struct and its container
with no problems. But then the work function must itself release the
work_struct by calling work_release().
In most cases, automatic release is fine, so this is the default. Special
initiators exist for the non-auto-release case (ending in _NAR).

Separate delayable work items from non-delayable work items be splitting them
into a separate structure (delayed_work), which incorporates a work_struct and
the timer_list removed from work_struct.
The work_struct struct is huge, and this limits it's usefulness. On a 64-bit
architecture it's nearly 100 bytes in size. This reduces that by half for the
non-delayable type of event.

When building a monolithic kernel, the load order of drivers does not
work for SAS libata users, resulting in a kernel oops.
Convert libata to use subsys_initcall instead of module_init, which
ensures that libata gets loaded before any LLDD.
This is the same thing that scsi core does to solve the problem. The
load order problem was observed on ipr SAS adapters and should exist for
other SAS users as well.

A curious thing happens, however, when ata_qc_new_init fails to get
an ata_queued_cmd:
First, ata_qc_new_init handles the failure like this:
cmd->result = (DID_OK << 16) | (QUEUE_FULL << 1);
done(cmd);
Then, we return to ata_scsi_translate and do this:
err_mem:
cmd->result = (DID_ERROR << 16);
done(cmd);
It appears to me that first we set a status code indicating that we're
ok but the device queue is full and finish the command, but then
we blow away that status code and replace it with an error flag and
finish the command a second time! That does not seem to be desirable
behavior since we merely want the I/O to wait until a command slot
frees up, not send errors up the block layer.
In the err_mem case, we should simply exit out of ata_scsi_translate
instead.

ahci_softreset() used to use ahci_tf_read() which reads D2H_REG area
to check for the Status register. However, this area is zeroed on
initialization and not set by initial signature FIS. Replace it with
ahci_check_status().
This bug prevented CLO code from being activated whenever BSY and/or
DRQ is set prior to softreset. This fix makes
AHCI_FLAG_RESET_NEEDS_CLO flag redundant.
